Using AI Technologies: A resource for lecturers to use with their students
AI tools such as ChatGPT have dominated higher education discourse since being released in late 2022. While early indications are that AI generated essays are possible to spot (a common syntax, citations are often fake, a lack of capacity to focus on local context), ChatGPT is the first in a wave of AI tools made generally available, and improvements are inevitable. Microsoft and Google are integrating AI into their products. The immediate future will see a lot of prompts to engage AI into normal workflows such as document production.
Discourse regarding AI and higher education has resulted in a consideration of three possible pathways: to ignore it, to try to avoid it, or to embrace it. As ignoring it and avoiding it are unlikely to be fruitful, the remaining option is to (cautiously) embrace AI and its role in higher education.
