Sports mega-events leveraging in the context of climate change: social capital as an instrument to facilitate Climate Resilience Strategy (CRS) for future event hosting
Sports mega-events (SMEs) have become a much-studied phenomenon in recent decades thanks to their pervasive influence on a wide range of aspects in the host cities or countries (Fourie and Santana-Gallego, 2011; Grix, 2012; Chalip, 2006). Besides hoped-for positive impacts such as tourism promotion, job creation, international prestige, urban regeneration, and social cohesion, there are also a number of alarming issues that are catching global attention and questioning the sustainability of SMEs (Raj and Musgrave, 2009). It is undeniable that SMEs leave significant environmental footprints. However, at the same time, the growing impact of climate change is also starting to affect the organisation, operation, and long-term viability of sports mega-events (Orr et al., 2022).
